Bio: Carey Goldberg is a health/science reporter at The Boston Globe. She covers neuroscience along with genomics and various medical topics, including reproductive health and psychiatry. Before coming to the Globe in 2002, Carey spent a year as a Knight Science Journalism Fellow at MIT, hoping to ease the transition from general reporting to coverage of science and medicine. From 1995 to 2001, she was a staff reporter at The New York Times, rising from Metro reporter, to national reporter in Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles, to Boston bureau chief. She spent most of her earlier career as a foreign correspondent. Fluent in Russian, she reported from the former Soviet Union from 1987-1995, working mainly for The Los Angeles Times. She has also used her knowledge of Hebrew during occasional reporting stints in Israel. Carey graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Yale in 1982.She also did graduate work at Harvard and Leningrad State University in the mid-1980s. She grew up in Newton and went to Newton North High School. She made the switch to science reporting because she suffered from a terrible sense of anticlimax after the collapse of the Soviet Union. She looked around for something that could seem as momentous and mind-boggling, and found it in the progress that scientists were making in their efforts to understand the world, particularly the world inside our own heads.

Soviet Paper Tells of Afghan War Underside  (Archive fee)
MOSCOW -- A newspaper lifted the lid yesterday off the dirty side of the war in Afghanistan, publishing accounts by two Soviet veterans of soldiers beating innocent prisoners, trading submachine guns for Soviet turncoats and barely surviving attacks by their own helicopters.

The weekly Moscow News carried the stories by Valery Abramov and Ruslan Umiyev under the headline, "The Whole Truth has to be Told About this War!"
