BEIRUT -- US and British officials said yesterday that recent diplomatic forays had produced some optimism that Westerners believed held hostage by pro-Iranian Shiite extremists could be released.
The No. 2 man in Britain's Foreign Office, Douglas Hogg, met for nearly two hours with the highest-ranking Shiite Muslim cleric in Lebanon, Sheik Mohammed Mehdi Shamseddin. Last month, Shamseddin proposed a swap of missing Israeli servicemen with about 400 Lebanese and Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, saying that would definitely lead to the release of the Western hostages.
