Bio: Marc J. Spears has been with The Boston Globe since September of 2007. The San Jose, Calif., native was originally hired to cover the Celtics beat and was promoted to NBA writer in April of 2008. Spears covered the Celtics' run to their first NBA title since 1986 last season and also covered the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He is in his 10th season covering the NBA and he covered the NBA and the Denver Nuggets for The Denver Post from 1999-2007.
Spears has also written NBA articles for ESPN.com, AOL.com, Men's Fitness Magazine, Dunk Shoot Magazine in Japan and Beckett's Magazine and also has been a guest on ESPN, NBATV, BBC News, Comcast New England, New England Sports Network, WHDH-TV Boston and many other television networks across the United States and Canada. He is currently serving a role as Vice-President of Print for the National Association of Black Journalist's Sports Task Force and helped raise $37,000 for aspiring sports journalists scholarships last year. Spears graduated from San Jose State with a bachelor's of arts in print journalism in 1995 while minoring in psychology. He also has a Associate's Arts degree from Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, Calif. Spears played college basketball at Foothill for two years, the University of District of Columbia for one and was a redshirt at San Jose State before suffering a tough knee injury and was all-league and all Central Coast Section at San Jose Andrew Hill High School. Spears was the commencement speaker at Foothill's 2007 graduation.
