Dell Hymes; scholar stressed cultural setting of language NEW YORK - Dell H. Hymes, a prominent anthropologist, linguist, and folklorist whose work mined the rich territory where language and culture intersect, died Nov. 13 in Charlottesville, Va., where he lived. He was 82.
