Under Fire, Yeltsin Vows To Wipe Out Rebellion  (Archive fee)
MOSCOW -- Facing criticism that Russia has not acted quickly enough to quash an Islamic rebellion in the south, President Boris N. Yeltsin promised yesterday that the militants would be defeated steadily but "without haste."

Yeltsin's acting prime minister, Vladimir Putin, was chastised Wednesday by members of Russia's upper house of Parliament, who said Russia should act more resolutely to stamp out the rebels who invaded several villages last week in the Caucasus region of Dagestan.
