As a Middle East Bureau Chief for The Boston Globe, Thanassis covered the Levant, with a particular focus on the Lebanon war and its aftermath. He is currently reporting on the Islamist revival in the Palestinian territories, Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon and Syria. He covered the war in Iraq from March 2003 until March 2006, living full time in Iraq for a year and a half. Thanassis joined the Globe staff in 2000. In Boston, he wrote about the war on terrorism's impact on the federal court system, as well as the criminal rights, sentencing, and changes in the state and federal court systems. He previously worked for the Associated Press in Greece and Indonesia. Thanassis studied international affairs for a master's degree at Princeton University, and did his undergraduate work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
